1967 Israel Occupies Gaza and the West Bank
Origins of the Conflict
The conflict between Israel and Palestine has its roots in the late 19th century, when European Jews began to establish settlements in Palestine, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, the British took control of Palestine and promised both Jews and Arabs independence. However, the British were unable to resolve the competing claims of the two groups, and in 1948, Israel declared independence.
The Six-Day War
In 1967, Israel launched a preemptive strike against Egypt, which had been massing troops on its border. Israel quickly defeated Egypt, as well as Syria and Jordan, and occupied the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights.
Aftermath
The Six-Day War was a major turning point in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Israel's victory led to a sense of euphoria and confidence among Israelis, while the Arab world was humiliated and defeated.
