International Criminal Court Established to Enforce Global Justice

A Permanent Institution for Prosecution of Grave Crimes

In a monumental step towards accountability, an International Criminal Court (ICC) has been established as a permanent institution to prosecute individuals responsible for the most heinous crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

Rome Statute: Founding Treaty of the ICC

The Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the ICC, was adopted in 1998 and entered into force in 2002. It defines the Court's jurisdiction, structure, and operating procedures. The ICC has the authority to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of committing these grave crimes, even if their own countries are unwilling or unable to do so.
