Eric Bieniemy: A Coaching Profile
Early Life and Career
Eric Bieniemy is a former American football running back and current offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. He played college football at Colorado and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the seventh round of the 1991 NFL Draft. Bieniemy spent nine seasons in the NFL, playing for the Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles.
After retiring from playing, Bieniemy began his coaching career as the running backs coach for the UCLA Bruins in 2001. He held that position for three seasons before being hired by the Minnesota Vikings as their running backs coach in 2006.
Assistant Coaching Career
Bieniemy spent five seasons as the Vikings' running backs coach, helping Adrian Peterson to set the NFL single-season rushing record in 2012. He was then hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as their offensive coordinator in 2018.
Under Bieniemy's leadership, the Chiefs have consistently ranked among the NFL's top offenses. They won Super Bowl LIV in 2020 and Super Bowl LVII in 2023.
Head Coaching Speculation
Bieniemy has been a popular candidate for head coaching vacancies in recent years. He interviewed for the head coaching job with the Denver Broncos in 2022 but was not hired. He is expected to be a candidate for other head coaching vacancies in the future.
