Earth Overshoot Day: A Call to Action
What is Earth Overshoot Day?
Earth Overshoot Day marks the day each year when humanity has used up all the natural resources that the planet can regenerate in that year. In other words, it's the day we start living on credit from future generations.
How is Earth Overshoot Day Calculated?
The Global Footprint Network calculates Earth Overshoot Day each year by dividing the world's total ecological footprint by the planet's biocapacity. The ecological footprint measures how much of the Earth's resources we use, while biocapacity measures how much of those resources the planet can regenerate.
What's the Trend?
Earth Overshoot Day is getting earlier every year. In 2000, it fell on September 22. In 2010, it was August 6. And in 2021, it was July 29.
What Can We Do?
There are many things we can do to reduce our ecological footprint and move Earth Overshoot Day later in the year. Here are a few ideas:
- Reduce our consumption of goods and services.
- Switch to renewable energy sources.
- Eat a plant-based diet.
- Support sustainable businesses.
- Get involved in environmental activism.
By taking these steps, we can help to create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
